GAMWS Hosting Spring Events in April and May

April 22, 2022

Just in time for spring, the Department of Global Arts, Media and Writing Studies (GAMWS) is sponsoring several events over the next few weeks.

The fourth annual GASP Faculty Concert is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, starting at 7 p.m. at the Merced College Theater with featured artist Michelle Allison. The performance will showcase a broad array of musical styles, including songs from Motown, Jazz, Broadway, Swedish and Finnish folk songs, Western classical music and more. Compositions will be performed by UC Merced faculty, students and guests. The event is free and open to the public.

The Global Arts, Media and Writing Studies Student Showcase is set to take place on the UC Merced campus on Thursday, May 5, from 6-9 p.m. The showcase will feature student art, music and dance performances, films, research presentations and a special performance of the play "If All the Sky Were Paper." Events will be held in the Social Sciences and Management Building and Classroom and Office Building 1. A full schedule can be found online.

Two public performances of "If All the Sky Were Paper" will be held on Friday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 8, at 2 p.m. Both performances will take place at the Merced Multicultural Arts Center, 645 W. Main St., in downtown Merced. Written by New York Times bestselling author Andrew Carroll and based upon his war letters project, this event features the students in the Advanced Performative Storytelling class. It will include a talk by the author at each performance. Tickets are $10 and all proceeds will be donated to American Legion Post 83. Tickets can be purchased on the Eventbrite website.

Carroll will also be presenting a free public lecture titled "LINES OF FIRE: The Search for the Greatest War Correspondences Ever Written" at the Merced College Theater on Saturday, May 7, at 2 p.m.

Questions about these events can be directed to Department of Global Arts, Media and Writing Studies Chair Jayson Beaster-Jones.
