The Labyrinth at UC Merced, opening in Fall 2023, stands as a symbol of tranquility and a new space for reflection and contemplation on the UC Merced campus. You can find The Labyrinth next to The Pavillion, nestled within the Kelley Grove on the banks of the Little Lake. Created by renowned labyrinth-artist Lars Howlett, The Labyrinth is designed to support the mental health and well being of our students, staff, faculty, and visitors. As you enter The Labyrinth, you are invited to embark on a meditative journey through a temporary escape from the demands of daily life.
Labyrinths have a rich historical and cultural significance that dates back thousands of years and can be found in various cultures and traditions around the world. The Labyrinth at UC Merced features a design known as the Baltic Wheel, which symbolizes unity, harmony, and the cyclical nature of life. As you engage with The Labyrinth's design, we invite you to contemplate your place within the larger web of existence and to recognize your role in the collective journey of the human experience. Integrating this ancient tradition into the fabric of the campus reflects UC Merced's commitment to celebrating diverse cultures and fostering a sense of global interconnectedness among our students, staff, and faculty. The Labyrinth also serves as a timeless reminder of the universal human quest for introspection and well-being.
