Big Rufus

In September 2024, "Big Rufus" was unveiled at the main entrance of the University of California, Merced campus. This 10-foot-long bronze sculpture, created by artist Dan Medina, depicts the university's bobcat mascot ascending three staggered concrete-and-steel pillars, reaching a total height of nearly 17 feet. The pillars are inscribed with words chosen by students: "Resilience," "Opportunity," "Future," "Diversity," and "Hope," embodying the core values and aspirations of the UC Merced community.

The realization of "Big Rufus" was made possible through philanthropic support, with Dr. Art Kamangar as the lead donor. The project was initiated in 2020, with significant contributions from various members of the university community.

Dan Medina, the artist behind "Big Rufus," is known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects. The inclusion of the word "Hope" on one of the pillars holds personal significance for Medina, as it honors his late mother, whose name was Hope. This connection adds a deeper layer of meaning to the sculpture, intertwining the artist's personal narrative with the collective aspirations of the UC Merced community.
