Dael Orlandersmith is an African American actress, playwright and poet. She received an Obie Award for her play Beauty’s Daughter. In 2002 she was a Pulitzer Prize Finalist for her play Yellowman. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Award. In 2003 she was also awarded the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize given annually to recognize women who have written works of outstanding quality for the English –speaking theater.

Dael Orlandersmith’s most recent play, Black n Blue Boys / Broken Men had its premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theater (Berkeley, California) in May 2012 and was subsequently performed at Goodman Theater (Chicago, Illinois). Black n Blue Boys / Broken Men is a play that Orlandersmith passionately addresses a difficult and often forgotten topic of physical and sexual abuse of boys and young men. Arts UC Merced Presents is proud to bring this important new play to the UC Merced campus for one performance.
