Lower-division Courses
GASP 2 Introduction to Music Studies
This course will explore the fundamentals of music through various idioms, genres and traditions.
GASP 3 Introduction to Visual Culture
An introduction to visual material in art and mass media from cultures throughout the world. The course emphasizes the development of students' own critical skills in analyzing and understanding visual culture. Topics include artworks from the antiquity to postmodernism, as well as issues in mass media, pop culture, and cyberspace.
GASP 5 Introduction to Arts & Technology (this course will be offered as either a Visual Culture or Music Studies course - the Fall 2008 course will be a Music Studies course)
This course will familiarize students with academic debates regarding the relationship between technology writ large and artistic production, distribution and consumption as well as critique and pleasure.
GASP 13 Latin American Art
This course will introduce students to the artistic traditions of Latin American cultures.
GASP 21 Ethnomusicology
This course will introduce and familiarize students to the theoretical and methodological issues and concerns in the field of ethnomusicology.
Upper-division Courses
GASP 175 Race and Nationalism in American Art
This seminar addresses issues concerning pictorial representations of racial and national identities in twentieth-century American art through readings of historical, cultural, and sociopolitical documents and theories. Special emphasis will be placed on artists who are considered outside the canon and on debates relating to assimilation and nationalism.
